When choosing your child’s Godparents:
It is the duty of godparents to assist the parents with the all-important task of bringing up the child in the faith. Parents should choose godparent(s) not simply because of a blood relationship or friendship; a godparent should be a trustworthy witness of faith who will help the godchild to live a faithful Christian life and attain salvation. When choosing your godparents, please ensure that they meet Cannon Law requirements.
Cannon Law states that the godparent(s) must be:
A practicing Catholic, registered and active at a parish
16 years or older
Be living a Christian moral life style, not living with a significant other before marriage
If single, they must have the sacraments of Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation
If married, they must be married in the Catholic Church
You may have two godparents (1 male and 1 female), or one male only or one female only.
-
Both the parents and godparents are required to watch the Baptism instruction videos available at Formed.org. The Baptism instruction videos help parents and godparents to understand the sacrament of Baptism and recognize their responsibility and role in the development of the child’s faith.
